[solved] Debian 6: Loconet 63120 ulniread permission denied

Postby Drehstromlampe » 18.09.2015, 23:03

Hi guys,

I'm running Debian Linux 6 with kernel 2.6.32-5-686 as a rocrail server.
The loconet usb-interface 63120 is configured according to the rocrail-wiki.
However, I'm getting a an error in the console and no rocrail-command will work (usually I test power on/off first)

Error looks is
Code: Select all
ulniread OSerial 0222 open rc=13 read=-1 write=-1 [13] [Permission denied]

The same device works fine on any other computer with windows/linux.

Any suggestions? I'm stuck.

Neither google nor board search found anything

Not entirely sure what you mean.

The device file entry was
-rw-rw-rw- root root ...

I also ran rocrail as root. Same problem there.

Hi Benni,

this is a Linux administration issue.
Normally root can do everything because its root.

I can't help you further but maybe some Linux experts will give you a helping hand.
Best Regards, Rob.

Hi Benny,

Are you member of the dial out group? sudo usermod -aG dialout <myuser>

Hi

yes I am.
But since the device file isn't owned by group dialout, this didn't change anything.

I'll add a udev-rule for the device so all /dev/ttyUSB* devices will be owned by group dialout. Maybe this will help.

The PC running the server is currently unavailable to me cause it's at a friends house several kilometers away.
I'll be testing solution-ideas in about two weeks when I'm over there again.

But I'm really wondering how this could be an issue, since the permissions for ttyUSB0 are -rw-rw-rw-.
So owner, group and others should be able to read and write the device.

Consider this solved.

The Rocrail-Server was moved to a Rasp Pi 2 running Ubuntu-Mate (kernel 3.18)
Therefor Getting the Rocrail plus the USB-Interface running on the old Debian 6 machine isn't a goal anymore.

For anyone else running into this problem I recommend adding a udev-rule so the USB-Interface will actually be owned by group dialout (because this wasn't the case using the old kernel).
Then add your user to the group dialout...
This problem existed with an old 2.6 kernel.
If the udev-rule won't fix it, leave old hard- and software to die in peace.
Get something more recent.
