Installation of the CAN-GC4 8 Channel RFID in MERG CBUS

Postby Waiski » 17.01.2016, 11:14

Hello Rocrailers,

I am a new in this forum but with a serious problem with my installation of the CAN-GC4 8 Channel RFID in MERG CBUS.

I assembled a CAN-CG1e Ethernet module and I got it working in my MERG layout with FCU (FLIM Configuration Utility) after Pete Brownlow made some minro changes in the PIC firmware. This made it possible to make it one Node "CANEthernet connection" in the FCU screen and theCBUS. The firmware was called 2e Beta 12. Now I have problems with the CAN-GC4 8 Channel RFID module.

I have about twentyfour MERG CBUS and DCC modules. I started to work with the GC4 but getting it to work in my layout seems almost impossible. I have tried the advice from Rocrail manuals in many ways but with no success.

The LED1 flashes every now and then especially when I send an event from the FCU or a MERG CBUS module. That could proof that there is CBUS messages noted by the module.

The LED2 is lit when the power is on.

The LED3 gets lit flashing when I push the PB1 button. When pushing again the PB1 button the yellow flashing stops.

Is the problem actually in the firmware? I have tried many different start-up procedures but nothing seems to start a New Node operation.

I would like the MERG FCU to find the new Node in the CBUS network just like I have configured all other modules by pushing the button and giving a new Node name and Node Number.

Running the Rocrail server and entering something in the Rocview sreen itt reports "iid=CBUS not found" so that would be the first
thing that has to be solved. Why is the CBUS not found?

May there is again something that has to be done in the firmware in order to pop up the GC4 in the FCU screen as a new Node.

I have written an article to the MERG Journal about using the GCA1e CANEther unit which works well.

I have also a plan to write an article to the MERG Journal about the various RFID modules and hope that I can Rocrail CAN-GC4 there too.

Hi Kai,

just attach your files:
5: If you are asking for support for Rocrail functionality, auto mode, switches, signals ... you have to post your rocrail.ini plan file and the trace file.
Best Regards, Rob.

Hi Rob,

And where are these? ... you have to post your rocrail.ini plan file and the trace file

Do I have to configure myself into Rocrail to check if my module works? Please give detailed instructions.

Why don't you tell me if the CAN-GC4 RFID module will ever work in the MERG CBUS environment.

Hi,

you can create an issue and attach the ZIP file here:
http://wiki.rocrail.net/doku.php?id=issue-en

The GC4 works; I developed the firmware using the unit.

But you have a basic configuration problem:
"iid=CBUS not found"

To help you by this you must attach your files.
Best Regards, Rob.

Hi Robert-Jan,

Please find my issue file about the problems to make the MERG CBUS understand Rocrail GC4 RFID module.

Hi Rob,

I received following answer from Pete Brownlow referring to the problem of using MERG CBUS:

Quote
""What I can tell you is that, in order to be compliant, a CBUS module
should request a new node number using the RQNN (0x50) opcode
(not NNACK which is used by Rocrail modules), the computer program
should set the node number using the SNN (0x42) opcode and the module
should then acknowledge this by sending the NNACK (0x52) opcode.
This is all set out in section 7.2 of the CBUS developers guide and it is in
this area that the firmware needs modifying to work correctly with other
CBUS compliant software.

Perhaps others in the Rocrail and/or MERG communities may be able to help.
It would be very desirable if Rocrail and the Rocrail CBUS modules became
compliant with the spec, as this would greatly aid inter-operability.

Hi Rob,

As for the CAN-GC1e Ethernet module, I could make it work in my MERG CBUS environment.
It was Pete Brownlow who made a new PIC firmware that enabled the use in FCU.

Quote:
""When the original CANGC1e firmware was written, the CBUS spec was just being completed,
and the method used by Rocrail to put a module into FLiM when you press the button is not
in compliance with the final CBUS spec. Rob was aware of this at the time but chose not to make the change.

To deal with this problem, when I updated the CANGC1e firmware to make it compliant
with the CBUS spec so that we could use it also in the CANEther hardware,
I made it so that is only works in the correct CBUS way if link JP2 is fitted -
so you must fit this link to put it into FLiM using FCU. To put it into FLiM using Rocrail,
leave this link out. Other operations, such as programming NVs, works the same
on both systems and are not affected by the link, so once it has been allocated
a node number via FLiM, you should be able to work it equally well by either system.

I'm not informed of a change in the CBUS Spec.

You cannot make a protocol incompatible if so much hardware is already installed.
In short: I will not make changes to the firmware.

How about you proudly advertising 29.9.2012:
The CAN-GC4 in the MERG Journal.

Peters CAN-GC4 has been published in the 2012 Autumn MERG Journal:

Why after long cooperation between MERG and Rocrail cannot you in practice support your modules in the MERG CBUS environmet?

Hi,

I checked the Rocrail implementation with the actual CBUS Specs and its implemented correctly.

I cannot support modified Firmware in CAN-GC* modules.
