sprog for train&switch control, feedback via ddx

Postby nachtlicht » 17.02.2014, 13:50

Hi - I'm new here and still exploring the digital train world.

I have already successfully installed rocrail/rocview, completed the track layout with all 40 switches, blocks, etc. and my trains run virtually on the rocrail simulation without any problems :) !

Now I am preparing for reality. Seems that Rocail provides a command center ddx which could conrol the layout via serial/parallel interface, without an (expensive) external command center.
But I read in the instructions that sprog should be preferred and that ddx is not supported any more.
However, I find that sprog does not have any feedback interface (e.g. S88-N).

Here are my questions:
1. Does anyone have experience with using ddx for managing the feeback channels e.g. via S88 or S88-N while sending commands (to locos, switches etc) through sprog?
2. Also, the sprog provides a maximum current of 2.5A which seems to be sufficient to run 3-4 locos simultaneously. Are the sprog's scalable (I ultimately want to manage approx. 16 locos and 40 switches, 100 feedback) - i.e. how cani add more than one booster into the circuit?

Thanks for any recommendations or experience reports!

cheers,
Christian

Maybe a better solution to collect S88 is the http://usuaris.tinet.cat/fmco/s88_en.html#GenHSI.

Hello Christian,
Although DDX is not supported any longer it still works great for me with one single ORD3 booster.
For feedback I use the HSI88 as Rob suggested.
I switched from Windows XP to Lubuntu because Rocrail with DDX runs better on Lubuntu (at least at my computer).

I bought a SprogIIv3 just for programming my DCC decoders. I cannot use the sprog for running the track because I still have a few trains with Märklin decoders.

Thanks. Sounds interesting. Would it also work with the USB verison of HSI88? (LDT says that Rocrail is not supported wiht the USB version)

You should read the Wiki first:
http://wiki.rocrail.net/doku.php?id=hsi88-en

But alternatively Paco also has a DIY GenHSI:

Hi Christian,

no, the USB version doesn't supported in Rocrail, because the USB interface inside of the HSI88 isn't an standard USB-Port with COM compatibility.
So You need the RS232 version of HSI88 and if necessary additional an USB-serial-Adapter.
But fortunately is this combination many cheaper as the pure USB version alone.

EDIT: sorry, Rob was faster

Sorry but thats not correct:
http://wiki.rocrail.net/doku.php?id=hsi88:hsi88usb-en

The support is deprecated but it should still work under Windows only.

Hi alll - many thanks for your tips!

I have ordered an HSI88 with RS232 and an adapter (RS232->USB). I did connect my S88 board and tried out both, a "Märklin Kontaktgleis" as well as a Hallsensor (TLE4905) and I got signals from both into Rocrail. Great!!
Actually the Signal from the Hall sensor was much cleaner than the one from the Kontakgleis.

I'll proceed now whith further tests before I scale this up (my plan has approx. 80 feedback sensors) :)

Question: what is a Hall sensor and how do you use it with S88 / HSI88?
