Hello from Finland

Post by MarttiM » 08.04.2019, 18:09

Hi all,

After focusing on analog operation for a long time, I decided recently to step also into things digital and got myself an entry-level Märklin starter set with MS2. Then I started looking into more advanced central stations. I was already on a path towards a CS3, until I realised that the track box that came with the MS2 is quite sufficient if I get myself something that connects its CAN bus to a computer. So, I got myself CAN Digital Bahn Startset 3 and started looking into suitable software to command it from my Mac laptop. After a brief look elsewhere I ended up with Rocrail, expecting that its facilities offer good opportunities for tailoring: in particular, the XML macro facility appeared impressive.

As a starter project I chose to figure out how to control my old metal Märklin 7186 turntable with Rocrail. I hooked it up with my setup with a 6083 K83 decoder and two 7245 universal relays, and wrote the rest with XML so that I can now run the turntable in semi-automatic mode with simulated position and bridge sensors. I am content with this result, as I do not wish to alter the hardware made in 1968 - I am still also in the business of collecting the whole Märklin sortiment from 1960's.

In any case, I am still a Rocrail noob, and will certainly need help from the community as I keep climbing the learning curve. Bear with me when I ask noob questions!

Hallo Claus,

Thanks! Yes, I have been shopping on the 60's items on eBay. I am nearly done with 1963/64 catalog items, but many others are still missing.

Hi Tom and Carlo,

Thanks for the welcome!

And thanks for asking, Carlo! I am fairly close to be done with goods cars, but only halfway there with passenger cars and locos. Of the accessories, I am missing quite a few, such as the fairly esoteric items 7213 trough 7217. I am not in a hurry with this objective, though. It is already now a challenge to keep all those locos in working condition.
