What is the best Operating System for the Rocrail Server

Post by Buddace » 15.05.2019, 20:24

We have to move from Raspberry Technology to personal computer Technology . Which is the best operative system to run rocrail server Linux or Windows ?
We have a modular layout with around ten Client Connect by Ethernet to rocrail Server.

Hi Buddace,

sorry, but even with the text of Your post I can't see a sense in the title.
Please check the title to change the part "... so fo ..." to comprehensible english words, thank You.

Should be "Best O.P. (operative system) for Rocrail" (so or, better, S.O. is an italian acronym and stands for "Sistema Operativo").

Hi,

I tested with a RPi, Verona19, one Rocview on RPi and one as Remote Rocview:
verona19-rpi.png
I do not see a memory problem, and no crash.
Starting a second Rocview on the same RPi will probably make the system unstable.

Compared with my Laptop, i5 1.6GHz 8GB, the RPi is a bit slow.
I recommend not to run Rocview on the same RPi. The RPi is very oft used as Rocrail Server.

With two Rocviews on the RPi all memory is almost used:

But its a bit senseless to run multiple Rocviews on one RPi...

Hi Rob I need more one Rocview because I use different view Tabview and full Layout...isn't possible switch view mode during runtime.
So we are buying this as server "Lenovo ThinkCentre M73 Tiny i5-4460T 1.9GHz QuadCore 500GB". Question Ubuntu or Windows 7 ? In old (some years ago) topics i remember linux is the best for server is net client are present.

Thanks for support.
My "test" conditions:
Server and one client in rpi
6 net clients
A lot of loconet traffic...very difficult to define busload
Clients execute just route via actions
Rocrail don't drive train
Observed :
Random crash and random slow response from rocrail

I tested with only the Server on the RPi with your Verona19.
Attached LocoNet and started the Rocrail server with command line option -stress.
This option will write and read 100 times per second a LocoNet packet.
If I start a remote Rocview, select a loco, use the mouse wheel to scroll speed, the Server is OK; 25% max CPU.
But if two Rocview Clients are also running on the same RPi, the CPU will go to 100% under the same conditions, and reacting very slow. (No crash)

As I already stated: Do not run the Rocviews on the same RPi.

BTW: The RPi is 3+

I prefere Linux. -> Lubuntu -> Faster Desktop.
Windows7 is from 2020 no longer maintained, so if you choose Windows -> 10.
