ORD3 with usb-rs232 problem

Postby teamllama » 12.06.2015, 15:51

Hello,

I have just finished building an ORD3 kit. I connected it up to my windows 7 laptop via a USB to RS232 adapter.

I have configured Rocview so that it uses DCC232.

When I press the power button in Rocview the green booster active LED illuminates on the ORD3.

However when I try sending any sort of command to a loco (even if there isn't a loco on the track) the ORD3 booster on and booster off LEDs flash alternately.

My guess is that either my USB to RS232 is not good enough or i have a setting wrong for it or a setting wrong in Rocrail.

What should the baud setting be for the serial port and are there any other settings that I need to configure or that I might have set incorrectly that would cause this to happen?

Many thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

just attach the needed files:

5: If you are asking for support for Rocrail functionality, auto mode, switches, signals ... you have to post your rocrail.ini plan file and the trace file.
Best Regards, Rob.

Hi Mike,

just use an FTDI USB-RS232 adapter:

Sorry about the missing files.

I have attached the rocrail.ini

I don't seem to have a trace file so i will plug everything back in and try and create one.

Hi,

I just emailed Peter; Maybe he knows whats wrong.
But the flashing LEDs is not documented so I think you have something wrong in the ORD3 assembling.

Hi Mike,

the flashing of the LEDs is only possible if the generated DCC signal is very slow.
This could be caused by the USB-RS232 device driver.
Try to use an FDTI converter.

Hi Rob,

Thank you for your help.

That is good news. I'm glad there isn't a problem with the ord3.

I shall take a look at the other type of adapters.

Kind regards,
Mike

A quick update on the issue.

I didn't want to spend more money buying a second (FTDI) usb to serial cable so I thought I would look for some better windows drivers.

The short answer to this is that there are NO better drivers for windows.

However the Linux drivers are much better.

As a result I have now installed the rocrail server on my Raspi and connected the ORD3 to it using my usb to serial cable.

Once rocview was configured on my windows laptop to use the raspi server I was successfully able to send commands to the ORD3! :D
